What I’m listening to…

Early in the morning when the sun does rise
Layin' in the bed with bloodshot eyes
Late in the evenin' when the sun sinks low
That's about the time my rooster crows
I got women up and down this creek
And they keep me going and my engine clean
Run me ragged but I don't fret
'Cause there ain't been one slow me down none yet

Thank you for listening to my message. We’re honored to have superstar Jennifer Bambrick as our guest writer this week. Jennifer holds multiple certifications as a health and nutrition coach, with a focus on healing through ancestral eating, along with Level 1 CrossFit certification. You will most likely find her in the kitchen cooking or out on the trails with her Weimaraner, Otto when not working with clients.

Take it away, Jennifer…

Our Genes are Expressed in the Here and Now

The concept and idea that we have control over the largest majority of how our genetic code is expressed might seem like crazy talk to many. We receive our genetic code from our parents and that is it. We are left up to the fate of these genes and there is nothing we can do about it. The infamous saying, it’s my genes, I am genetically predisposed to be like this and there is nothing I can do. I can’t change my genes.

In part this is true. Let’s think of our genetic code in two categories, familial and Homo sapiens genes. Our familial genes, the ones we receive from our parents and what makes us our own unique individual self, our features, height, eye and natural hair color, skin pigmentation, being an athlete, academically or musically inclined and predispositions to certain diseases. We will consider these our set genes and they make up a very small portion of our genetic code. Outside of predispositions, these are the genes we need to accept, tap into our full genetic ability and create a thriving life.

Our Homo sapiens genes, the basic genetic code for life, these are the genes we have tremendous influence over. These genes are sequences of DNA and are benign until expressed. Think of them as sequences of potential information. The genes that are expressed are controlled by the signals we give them. These expressions can be either for our greater health or disease promoting. We influence which genes are expressed by our environment, mental, emotional state, food, exposure to nature, sun, sleep, play, and our relationships. Our health all depends on which genes are expressed.

Consideration on predisposition from the knowledge of influencing our genes, this doesn’t mean we are guaranteed to have any diseases we are predisposed to. Remember, our DNA is only a sequence of potential information. It has to be expressed for it to do anything. This is a portion of our genetics we can influence by our environment, food we eat. You can influence your chances of having or not having any diseases by the signals you give your genes, family history or not.

Genes  are on/off switches for building protein structures from amino acids, which is what we are made of, three dimensional protein structures coming together to create the human being and life on earth. When the signals to create a healthy human are given most of the time, our health thrives.

Let’s consider some of the influences we have over the expression of our genes:

Food: where we receive our protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, if we do not have enough of these coming in from our eating, our DNA can become damaged, signals aren't turned on or maybe off. There aren't the building blocks, amino acids, to make what the DNA is coding for. Food gives our genes the signal to express themselves or not, creating health and vitality or disease.

Environment we live in. Do you spend most of your time indoors? How much time in nature do you spend? Do you live a high stressed life? What are your relationships like, supportive and encouraging? Draining and toxic? What is your relationship with yourself? Your emotions? Thoughts about yourself and the world at large? How much sleep do you get on a consistent basis? What type of cleaning and personal care products do you use? Environment encompasses all this and more. Depending on the signals your genes are receiving from your environment will influence which genes are turned on and which are turned off.

Genes respond in the short-term with little regard to the long term consequences. Your genes are responding to each meal, thought, amount or lack of exercise, time connected to and in nature, our genes respond to what they are given at that moment. The expression of your genes impacts your long term outcome towards health or disease but is expressed in the present from the signals you are giving your genes moment by moment. Genes express themselves in the present.

On the flip side, our genes expect us to be healthy, lean, strong, eat mainly animal protein and fat, lower carb most of the year, fasting, sleeping, sun exposure, ample time in nature. Health is the natural pre-set for the human being. When we give our genes the signals to thrive through food, sleep, nature, time with those we love, healthy environments, our genes will express themselves optimally and we will have vibrant health. Create the life for your genes to express themselves optimally as often as possible and watch your health thrive.

“Clara and Fritz Tallow shop was born out of a years-long red-pill experience. Beginning with dabbling in the world of minimalism, we began questioning everything that we had previously considered normal as far as how we were conducting our lives. This led us to overhaul our diets and finances, and to seek out alternative solutions to our food sources, the products we consume, healthcare, news sources, etc. After years of following knowledgeable people in the space, we decided to give tallow skincare a try after trying a long line of expensive “clean” products that just didn’t work very well. The positive results were so staggering that we became instant believers and wanted to share the product with others and join the movement to bring back traditional skincare and foods.”
